To answer this question quickly, I will just saw that all of the lights are computer controlled using a program called Vixen (http://www.vixenlights.com). Vixen controls currently 4 separate boards with Programmable IC chips that control dimming of 120 V lighting.
How many lights do you have?
Currently, the Christmas display fancies close to 10,000 individual bulbs. Hopefully there will be more to come.

To buy a commercial system, you're looking at several thousand dollars. I was able to do it at a fraction of the cost, with no sacrifice of functionality, and, most importantly, safety.
